The first thing to tell you about is the peacocks! They live here, roaming free all over, and have no fear of us whatsoever. It was awesome!
The campground is beautiful with trees, flowers, peacocks, birds, squirrels...
They do have a unique call and if you don't know what it is it can be startling. At night they called out to each other when it was time to go to bed in the trees and then they were silent til morning.
What was amazing was the interaction between the dogs and the peacocks. They all just regarded each other with curiosity and respect, in silence. The dogs just sat in silence watching the peacocks and the peacocks walked right through our campsite watching the dogs but not making a sound.
As you can see we had no "neighbors" in the site next to us. Since we were there in the middle of May and during the week, we almost had the whole place to ourselves.
We got to watch the males try to attract the females with their fanning tail feather displays...
It was so fun to watch and this female was just not at all impressed.
If you've never seen a male peacock do his mating dance before, it is really a spectacle. I wish I had taken a video. Imagine this tooshie vibrating while he slowly turned around and around.
And then he slowly lowers his big beautiful tail feathers...
This female took a liking to our campsite. She walked right up to the door. I wonder if she has been hand-fed by people here.
I was standing in the doorway and she came up as close as she could. We have a little fence for the dogs so she came up to the fence and looked in.
I wondered if she was considering jumping up over the fence and coming inside.
And there were babies! This little one was running away with its parents chasing after it.
But it wasn't just the peacocks that made it perfect.
We walked all around and loved it all, well... Richard and Awbri walked ALL AROUND... I walked a little.
The "Ranch" is tucked into the valley between the mountains surrounded by orchards.
The trees!!! Pepper trees, Palm trees, Oaks, Eucalyptus...
We even saw a California Roadrunner... : )
And flowering cactus...
A Palm tree and a Pepper tree full of peppercorn berries.
Some Snapdragons...
Colorful succulents.
"Frog Meadow"
And then I got to see the babies... look closely... they blend in...
This mama peahen had 7 little peachicks!
There is a Dog Park (Kamp K-9) that Richard and Awbri visited every day, and a Jumping Pillow, pool, Zip Line... I will copy the description of the campground at the end with the website.
In the morning we heard the peacocks in the trees. I did not know they slept way up in the tops of the trees.
The weather was gorgeous. We had coffee on the patio in the morning and s'mores by the fire at night.
Just lounging in my chair I had this view...
It is a 10-minute drive into Ventura which is very dog-friendly and there are many places to eat with the dogs. And it only takes 15 minutes to get to the beach. Ojai is one of my favorite places to visit and it is also a short, beautiful, drive from the Ranch. I will do a separate blog of our beach days.
The KOA Campgrounds are family-oriented with activities for everyone but also comfortable for the mobility-challenged.
Even if you are not captivated by the peacocks this is a fabulous place for a vacation. If you don't want to "camp" there are cabins and this one has a chandelier on the balcony...
