Leaving Williams, AZ (Grand Canyon) heading to Las Vegas, Nevada... the area is beautiful but the road was terrible as you can see in these pictures.
See all the potholes???
This is Highway 40 and it was awful!
Coming down from the Prescott National Forest into Mohave.
The weather was perfect. We were grateful for that.
The scenery changes dramatically from Northern Arizona to Nevada.
It was a perfect 76 degrees.
Highway 93 from Kingman to Hoover Dam
My original plan was to stop at Hoover Dam but it is not recommended towing a 5th wheel or trailer.
Here the signs of wildlife to watch for are bighorn sheep instead of deer or elk.
Our first glimpse of Lake Mead.
I used to go to this lake several times a year. It is so low now. It makes me sad.
The temperature changed from 76 to 90.
We arrived at the KOA in Las Vegas and my heart swelled... Palm trees and Oleander... It's been too long!
My dear friend, Aurora, came to visit us at our campsite but we forgot to take pics. We were so caught up in catching up.
This is the new casino, The Cannery, next to the campground. It changes colors...
We decided to go to Hoover Dam the next day.
Driving from Vegas to Hoover Dam
through Henderson and Boulder City by Lake Mead...
We drove across the Dam to the Arizona side...
It was hot! The ground was too hot for Princess Monkeybutt.
There is a houseboat in this picture... it looks tiny.
At a different time of the year the Arizona time and Nevada time are off by one hour.
I think it is perfect that I captured a "selfie" here... lol
We drove back across the dam to the Nevada side and went into the parking structure.
Now this is where we were shocked... there are NO DOGS ALLOWED on the Nevada side of the dam. I mean, they wouldn't even let us park our truck there with our dogs.
I am 100% serious. The parking attendant told us dogs are only allowed on the Arizona side.
We drove back out to where the parking area is to walk up to the lookout.
They need to add to this... Dogs Are Not Welcome! :o(
Since our fur babies were not allowed anywhere we just parked in the lot and I stayed in the truck, but it is a big hike that I could not do anyway so Richard took the camera and hiked up to the bridge by himself.
There we are in our truck...
We went to the Lake Mead Overlook. It was extremely windy.
But it was clear and sunny and warm!
.We wondered why in the world there is a bench by this tunnel?
This little guy was watching us...
We went back into Boulder City to the Camping World for a few supplies.
I love this...
We have been to Fremont St. in Vegas at night and loved it. I found on BringFido.com a restaurant that is dog friendly called "Park on Fremont" so we went there for lunch.
Our dogs were welcomed on the patio out front but not in the "park area" that I had read about.
We had a nice lunch and a couple of drinks. It was very hot!
Since we had loved Fremont Street the last time we were there we decided to see what it is like during the day.
Well... it is very different during the day. It was crazy! Not what we like at all.
We went back to our campsite and I went to the surprise birthday party. We didn't feel comfortable leaving our dogs alone at the campground for that long so Richard stayed with them.
The next day we headed to California!
When we first saw this we had no idea what it was...
It's been a few years since I've been here and I have not heard about these solar farms...
A lot has changed but thank goodness some things stay the same...
The giant thermometer in Baker!
And still there were no open Rest Areas.
I remember Rest Areas on this route but they are all closed now.
The California Desert is just as I remember it...
But wait... is that little mountain smiling? Look... is that a smiling face?
We stayed in Acton at the KOA for the next night so we could spend some time with friends in Palmdale. I had forgotten about the fire.
The fire had swept through the canyon but had not destroyed the campground.
It is heartbreaking to see the dead trees but there is a lot of new growth
so life is coming back to the area.
It was Mother's Day and I got to spend it with my daughter and grandbabies! :o)
It was worth the drive across the country!
Aaaaahhhhhhhhh....
